Jamaican Black Castor Oil vs Cold-Pressed Castor Oil: Which to Buy in Nigeria
buying-guides

Jamaican black castor oil (JBCO) and cold-pressed castor oil come from the same castor seeds. The difference is the process. JBCO is made from roasted seeds that are ground and boiled, which gives it a dark brown colour and a smoky smell. Cold-pressed castor oil is pressed from raw seeds and is pale yellow with a mild smell. No good study shows that one grows hair better than the other. In Nigeria, JBCO usually costs about twice as much per ml or more. For most people using castor oil on hair, edges and skin, cold-pressed oil does the same job for less money.

How each oil is made

Jamaican black castor oil

The traditional Jamaican method roasts the castor seeds, pounds or grinds them, then boils the mash in water and skims the oil off the top. Some makers also add ash from the roasted seed shells. Roasting and ash give JBCO its:

  • dark brown to near-black colour
  • smoky, roasted smell

Cold-pressed castor oil

Cold-pressed castor oil is squeezed from raw seeds mechanically, without roasting, boiling or chemical solvents. The result is:

  • pale yellow to golden, clear oil
  • a mild, faintly nutty smell
  • very thick texture, close to honey

Both oils are mostly ricinoleic acid, the fatty acid that makes castor oil unusual. Roughly 90% of castor oil's fatty acids are ricinoleic acid, whichever way it is made.

Is JBCO better for hair growth?

You will see claims that JBCO is "more alkaline" or "opens the hair cuticle" thanks to the ash, so it grows hair faster. There is no clinical evidence for this, and no good evidence that any castor oil makes hair grow faster. What both oils do well is coat and soften hair, reduce dryness and help limit breakage, which helps you keep length. On that job, they behave very similarly. Read our honest castor oil for hair growth routine for how to use either one.

Jamaican black castor oil price in Nigeria vs cold-pressed

Prices we saw on Jumia on 13 October 2026:

  • JBCO 2oz (about 60ml): about ₦11,000 to ₦18,500, roughly ₦185 to ₦310 per ml
  • JBCO 4oz (about 118ml): about ₦11,800 to ₦18,000, roughly ₦100 to ₦150 per ml
  • JBCO 8oz (about 237ml): around ₦24,000, roughly ₦100 per ml
  • xHerbs cold-pressed castor oil 200ml: ₦10,500 on xherbs.store, about ₦52 per ml

So JBCO costs roughly two to six times more per ml, depending on the size you buy. See the full castor oil price in Nigeria guide for other types.

Side by side

  • Seeds: JBCO uses roasted seeds. Cold-pressed uses raw seeds.
  • Colour: JBCO is dark brown. Cold-pressed is pale yellow to golden.
  • Smell: JBCO is smoky. Cold-pressed is mild.
  • Main fatty acid: both are about 90% ricinoleic acid.
  • Proven hair growth: neither has clinical proof.
  • Price per ml in Nigeria: JBCO is about ₦100 to ₦310. Cold-pressed is from about ₦52 (xHerbs 200ml).
  • Fakes to watch for: for JBCO, many "Jamaican" brands are made outside Jamaica, so read where it was made. For cold-pressed, the risk is dilution with thinner oils.

Which should you buy?

  • Choose cold-pressed if you want the best value, a mild smell, or oil for skin, massage or castor oil packs as well as hair.
  • Choose JBCO if you simply prefer its feel and smoky scent and don't mind paying more. That is a fair personal choice, just not a proven better treatment.
  • Either way, patch test first, keep it out of your eyes, and don't drink cosmetic castor oil.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Jamaican black castor oil and regular castor oil?

JBCO is made from roasted seeds, so it is dark and smoky. Regular cold-pressed castor oil is pressed from raw seeds and is pale and mild. Their fatty-acid make-up is very similar.

How much is Jamaican black castor oil in Lagos?

In October 2026, JBCO listed on Jumia at about ₦11,000 to ₦18,500 for small 2oz to 4oz bottles and around ₦24,000 for 8oz. Prices in Lagos shops vary, so compare price per ml.

Can I use cold-pressed castor oil instead of JBCO?

Yes. For moisturising hair and edges, sealing ends and scalp massage, cold-pressed castor oil does the same job at a lower price per ml.

Is dark castor oil always Jamaican black castor oil?

Not necessarily. Dark colour is normal for JBCO, but a "cold-pressed" oil that is very dark may be old or mixed. Check the label and smell.

Bottom line: JBCO and cold-pressed castor oil come from the same seed. JBCO is roasted, dark and smoky, while cold-pressed is pale and mild, and neither is proven to grow hair faster. In Nigeria, cold-pressed oil is usually much cheaper per ml. In Lagos, xHerbs cold-pressed castor oil is at Elo-Ruks Naturals, Articles Market, Abule Oshun, and on xherbs.store.
