Castor Oil Side Effects on Skin, Hair, Eyes and Stomach

Castor oil is safe for most people on the skin and hair, but it does have side effects. On the skin, it can cause irritation or an allergic rash in some people. On the hair, heavy use causes build-up and, rarely, badly matted long hair. In the eyes, it causes irritation and blurred vision. Swallowed, it is a strong laxative that can cause cramps, diarrhoea and dehydration. In pregnancy, it can trigger contractions. Below is each one, how to avoid it, and what to do if it happens.
Castor oil side effects on the skin
- Irritation: redness, itching or burning, more likely on sensitive skin or with heavy use.
- Allergic contact dermatitis: castor oil is a known, if uncommon, cause of allergic rashes. One well-known example is lip rashes from castor oil in lipsticks.
- Clogged pores: heavy oils can contribute to breakouts in acne-prone skin, though castor oil is less likely to than coconut oil.
Avoid it by patch testing on your inner arm for 24 hours (48 hours for the face), using small amounts, diluting it for the face, and not applying it to broken or irritated skin. See castor oil for face.
Castor oil side effects on the hair
- Build-up and greasiness: castor oil is thick. Layered for weeks without washing, it clogs the scalp and attracts dust.
- Hair felting (rare): there are case reports of long, loose hair matting into a hard, tangled mass after heavy castor oil use, which sometimes needs cutting out. Dilute it and detangle gently.
- Scalp itching if you react to it.
Avoid it by mixing 1 part castor oil to 2 parts lighter oil, using a little, and washing it out regularly. See castor oil for hair.
Castor oil side effects on the eyes
Cosmetic castor oil in the eye can cause stinging, redness, watering and blurred vision. Using a dirty applicator near the eye raises the risk of infection. Some eye drops do contain sterile, pharmaceutical-grade castor oil, but that is very different from putting cosmetic oil in your eye. If it gets in, rinse with clean water. See a doctor if pain, redness or blurred vision lasts. Read castor oil for eyelashes and eyebrows before using it near your eyes.
Castor oil side effects on the stomach
Swallowed, castor oil is a stimulant laxative. Side effects include cramps, diarrhoea, nausea, dehydration and, with repeated use, low potassium and laxative dependence. Never drink cosmetic castor oil, and never use any castor oil for weight loss. See can I drink castor oil?
Castor oil side effects in pregnancy
Taken by mouth, castor oil can trigger contractions, which is why it has been used to try to start labour. Without medical supervision this is risky. If you are pregnant, don't take castor oil by mouth, and ask your doctor or midwife before using castor oil packs on your belly.
Castor oil and children
- Never give castor oil by mouth to babies or children unless a doctor says so.
- Store bottles out of reach.
- Check with a doctor before using it on a baby's skin.
What about ricin?
Castor seeds contain ricin, a dangerous poison. Properly processed castor oil doesn't contain ricin, because it stays in the seed pulp, not the oil. Never chew or eat castor seeds, and never try to make castor oil at home. Buy sealed, labelled oil from a traceable seller.
When to stop and get help
- a rash that spreads, blisters or swells
- swelling of the lips, face or throat, or difficulty breathing (get emergency care)
- eye pain or blurred vision that doesn't clear after rinsing
- severe diarrhoea, dizziness or signs of dehydration after swallowing castor oil
