Virgin Coconut Oil vs Coconut Oil: Refined, Cold-Pressed and Fractionated Explained
buying-guides

Virgin coconut oil is made from fresh coconut without refining, so it keeps a clear coconut smell and taste. Regular coconut oil usually means refined oil: made from dried coconut (copra), then refined, bleached and deodorised, so it has little smell and handles higher cooking heat. For hair, skin and babies, virgin or cold-pressed oil is the usual choice. For frying, refined oil is often more practical and cheaper. Below we compare virgin vs refined vs cold-pressed vs "extra virgin" vs fractionated, and Nigerian local coconut oil too, so you know what you are paying for.

The main types of coconut oil

Virgin coconut oil (VCO)

Made from fresh coconut meat, either by pressing or by extracting the oil from coconut milk, with no chemical refining. It is clear when liquid, white when solid, and smells and tastes of coconut. This is the type used in the clinical study on children's eczema.

Cold-pressed coconut oil

Describes how the oil was extracted: mechanically, without added high heat. Cold-pressed oil from fresh coconut is a form of virgin oil. In practice "cold-pressed" and "virgin" are often used together. Check that the label doesn't also say refined.

"Extra virgin" coconut oil

Unlike olive oil, coconut oil has no agreed standard for "extra virgin". It is marketing language. Judge the oil by its smell, clarity and source instead.

Refined coconut oil (RBD)

Refined, bleached and deodorised, usually from dried copra. It has a neutral smell and taste, a higher smoke point for frying, a lower price, and a long shelf life. It is not fake oil, just a different product.

Fractionated coconut oil

Processed to remove the fats that make coconut oil solid, so it stays liquid even when cold. Mostly used as a light massage or carrier oil in cosmetics. It is not usually sold for cooking.

Nigerian "local" coconut oil

Often made at home or in small batches by boiling coconut milk until the oil separates. It is unrefined, but the heat gives it a slightly golden colour and a toasted smell. It can be good oil. Freshness and hygiene depend on the maker.

Virgin vs refined coconut oil, side by side

  • Made from: virgin oil comes from fresh coconut. Refined oil usually comes from dried coconut (copra).
  • Processing: virgin oil is pressed or separated with no refining. Refined oil is refined, bleached and deodorised.
  • Smell and taste: virgin oil smells of coconut. Refined oil is neutral.
  • Frying heat: virgin oil smokes at moderate heat, around 175°C. Refined oil handles higher heat.
  • Best for: virgin oil for hair, skin, babies and flavour in cooking. Refined oil for everyday frying.
  • Price: virgin oil usually costs more. Refined oil is usually cheaper.

Which coconut oil should you buy?

How to tell what you've got

  • Smell it: fresh coconut means virgin. Almost no smell means refined. Toasted means a hot-processed local oil. Sour or cheesy means rancid, so discard it.
  • Look at it: virgin oil is water-clear when liquid. Cloudiness while warm or sediment suggests moisture or poor processing.
  • Chill it: virgin and refined coconut oil both set solid in the fridge. Fractionated oil won't.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between virgin coconut oil and coconut oil?

Virgin coconut oil is made from fresh coconut without refining and keeps its coconut smell. Ordinary coconut oil is usually refined, with a neutral smell, higher frying heat and lower price.

Is cold-pressed coconut oil the same as virgin?

Cold-pressed describes the extraction method. Cold-pressed oil from fresh coconut is a type of virgin oil, but check that the label doesn't also say refined.

Is extra virgin coconut oil better?

There is no standard for "extra virgin" coconut oil, so the label alone means little. Judge by smell, clarity and seller.

Which is better for hair, virgin or refined?

Virgin or cold-pressed is the usual choice for hair and skin. Refined oil works too, but it lacks the coconut aroma and is mostly sold for cooking.

Bottom line: Virgin (or cold-pressed) coconut oil is unrefined and smells of coconut, and it is best for hair, skin and babies. Refined oil is neutral, cheaper and better for high-heat frying. "Extra virgin" means nothing special for coconut oil. In Port Harcourt, buy xHerbs cold-pressed coconut oil at Doyen Pharmacy, Golf Estate, or on xherbs.store.
